VASGBI - RSS Newsfeed
This is a new feature of the website that will help you stay up-to-date with happenings in the VASGBI. RSS newsfeeds alert you to changes or new pages in a website without you having to check the site first. They are being used on many websites, including the BBC. It's a bit like receiving news texts on your mobile phone.
How do you use newsfeeds?
There are three main ways to receive news headlines.
If you are asked to enter a "URL" or page address, enter: http://www.vasgbi.com/VASGBIfeed.xml (this will not show anything meaningful if you just open it in a browser).
If you want to install a newsfeed reader, there are a number available on the internet, but I use one called "Feedreader". This free program displays a little message on your computer screen every time a news item is produced by us. A brief summary is shown in the program with the option to view the relevant web page.
Some web browsers are capable of receiving newsfeeds (such as the excellent free Mozilla Firefox browser
), and the most recent version of Internet Explorer (v7). If you use Mozilla Firefox, you will notice a small orange icon in the bottom right hand corner or at the end of the address bar of our home page or this page, looking like this (depending on the version of Firefox):
or
If you click on the icon and then click "subscribe to 'rss'..." you can add it to your bookmarks. Every time you open your browser, you will see that this new bookmark has been updated with the latest news! Even better, you can put this bookmark on your bookmarks toolbar, so you can see your news items easily (it will appear as below):
3. Using a newsfeed-enabled email program:
Using a suitable email program (such as the excellent free Mozilla Thunderbird
) you can also receive rss headlines along with your emails. Using Thunderbird, do: Tools > Account Settings... > Add Account... > RSS News & Blogs > Next > Next > Finish. This will create a new news folder. Click once on this new folder, then click the "manage subscriptions" button in the main window. Click "Add", then enter the above "URL". Then you're done!
