VASGBI - National Vascular Database
The major initiative of the Audit Committee is to develop a National Vascular Database jointly with the Vascular Surgical Society. This is an extensive undertaking, which will be ongoing, with the twin aims of a) allowing individual hospitals, anaesthetists and surgeons to monitor their results and compare then with the national standards while maintaining full confidentiality, and b) conducting observational research into important aspects of vascular anaesthesia.
The audit committee are developing a joint audit with the Vascular Surgical Society with the intention of producing a National Vascular Database. The surgical dataset contains much information about preoperative patient status, intraoperative conduct and postoperative outcome. However they omit several items that are of specific interest to anaesthetists, such as the use of epidurals. We have developed a supplementary dataset that we wish to collect in addition to the data that the surgeons are collecting.
We have made an Access97 database that you can download if you want to collect data. The file can be downloaded by clicking here (206 kB) or if you prefer a smaller download a copressed file can be downloaded here (32 kB). You need WinZip or another decompression program to extract the compressed database file. The data is going to be anonymyzed so if you are intending to contribute data to the pilot National Vascular Database you will need to contact Sara Baker for an identification code.
If you don't have Access or use a Mac then the dataset field names, field order, field format and selection options are enclosed in a comma-separated file which can be opened in in Word, Excel, Notepad or any Mac program that can open ASCII files.
